El'essar

Alignment: Chaotic Good

Domains: Good, War, Chaos

The patron god of the elves advocates that all elves find their balance in the world according to their own nature. Life is about developing abilities and potential as only a long-lived race can do. Personal growth is the goal of this deity, whether its realized gradually or at a rapid pace. Of course, she also realizes that it is impossible to seek balance within when the world is out of balance, so this god also quickly rallies her followers to combat evil when it seeks to overthrow the balance of the world. There are no organized temples to this god, as she would not seek any worshipers in a place of artificial manufacture. Each being has their own image of how this goal should appear. Her priests form loose organizations at best, but can become mighty and unified when a threat arises.

Description

El’lessar is a goddess of introspection and self-exploration, seeking the depths of the inner self and the ability to develop one’s potential and abilities. One of the major requirements for introspection is personal freedom. To this end one should not be afraid to fight for themselves or others when something threatens to take away personal freedoms. This quality has made El’lessar the opponent of tyrants and any who would oppress a sentient race. She is the enemy of several gods from her own pantheon, and others. In particular El’lessar has hated the L’aelus goddess Lolth for the spider queen’s oppression of the Underdark dwellers through fear and intimidation. In her own pantheon El’lessar’s greatest foes are In’eth Xa, and Paragor, as they both represent those who seek enslavement and control of others. El’lessar has also had a few minor disagreements with the dwarven god Berur, as she cannot understand his taciturn ways and his fascination with external things. El’lessar has worked several times with Nimeth, whom the goddess finds amusing, as Nimeth’s free nature matches her own very well.

El’lessar has always had an affinity for the Elven race, as she believes only such a long-lived group could potentially explore their own potential to the fullest. The lack of Elvin people in the realm this pantheon governs has thwarted her intent to explore their potential. When the war caused a group of elves to become displaced into this pantheon’s domain, El’lessar quickly volunteered to become the patron deity for the elves. Unknown to the rest of the pantheon El’lessar violated the rule to remain out of contact, though El’lessar did not directly contact her future profits. Instead she influenced the elves’ natural meditative state, drawing a select few more deeply into their trances. In this subtle method she inspired a new, introspective culture in a race that was all ready familiar with meditation and self-exploration. Through her prophets she teaches a martial style of meditation and discipline, allowing her people to explore their own path, but also making sure they are ready to protect their personal freedom however possible.

Temple Structure

The temples of El’lessar most often take the form of monasteries, separated into areas of meditation/contemplation, and combat training. Priests and priestesses of El’lessar usually have at some training in the monkly ways, as the meditation learned from that discipline makes it easier for them to contact their patron goddess. These temples also function as guardhouses and strong points, places of defense where people can escape to in times of need. All priests of El’lessar are taught that personal freedom and exploration are of paramount importance, these priests are very forgiving of the mistakes of others, the guidance of their goddess along with their own long-lived natures have taught them that many can correct their own errors in time. In general there is no real hierarchy in these temples, the occupants recognizing experience and age over power or personal wealth. The new initiates, who hope to receive wisdom these elders have accumulated, often revere those further along their personal path.

Worshippers

Elves are the most common worshippers of El’lessar, as befits the relationship they have developed. Any member of any race that attempts to explore its own potential can worship El’lessar, though many of the shorter lived or more violent races are rarely seen among the ranks of El’lessar’s worshippers. In particular half-orcs, Halflings and gnomes are seen as lacking the dedication or attention to take the introspective path. As El’lessar believes in the exploration of oneself any alignment can worship her, though the requirement to defend against those that would oppress leaves most of an evil bent out of the temples.
